to send a check to MDS

MDS Binational Office
1018 Main St
Akron
, PA 17501

"Checks made out to "Mennonite Disaster Service" can be sent to the MDS office While contributions to the general fund allow  more flexibility in MDS response, we also accept donations for individual projects. To designate a contribution, simply write the name of the project on the memo line and your funds will be forwarded to that response."

I'm personally familiar with the Mennonite Disaster Service.  In June 1972 I was a reporter and photographer for the Havre de Grace Record, in Havre de Grace Maryland and covered the effects of Tropical Storm Agnes which caused the Susquehanna River to overflow and cause extensive damage in the river town of Port Deposit, Md.  The MDS was one of the first organizations on the scene and it's volunteers did an incredible job helping in the clean-up following the disaster.

The Salvation Army ...

"The Salvation Army is currently providing services to storm victims and first responders in the Gulf Coast states. A $100 donation to The Salvation Army will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household clean-up kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies."

"Financial contributions are greatly needed, and provide The Salvation Army with the funds to purchase what storm victims need. They also allow The Salvation Army to assess the unique needs of individuals and families, as well as put money back into the economy of those communities affected by the disaster."

"When Disaster Strikes...Donations Are Needed -How You Can Help

Everyone is moved when they hear the news that disaster has befallen a community. Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc., can suddenly change the lifestyle of a family, community and country.

Some helpful ways in which you can be of assistance are part of the National Donations Strategy which has been developed by the National Donations Steering Committee composed of federal, stateand local emergency management personnel assisted by private voluntary organizations.

The most effective guidelines for sending in-kind donations to disaster victims are:

  1. Contributions of Cash - Often the Best Donation
Monetary contributions allow the professional relief organizations to purchase exactly what is most urgently needed by disaster victims and to pay for the transportation necessary to distribute the supplies."
