Most other watch winders on the market are designed and manufactured to produce only one rate of turns per day, say 900 TPD as in one of the winder brands frequently advertised on watch sales and trading forums. That is the cheapest way to build a watch winder - - with only one rate of turns per day.

A watch winder with that fixed rate 900 turns per day (TPD) will over-wind many of the most popular watches. For example, most Rolexes only require 650 turns per day, many IWCs and Omegas only require between 650 and 800 turns per day. At that rate those watch winders are overwinding those watches by as much as 250 turns per day. While some winders have too high a rate of turns per day, other watch winders may have a motor that that runs at too few turns per day to wind some watches.

But, you might ask, don't most modern automatic watches have a clutch in the movement to prevent overwinding?

Yes, they do ... BUT continually overwinding a watch on a watch winder puts extra stress and wear on that clutch -- which can cause it to wear out prematurely. It's kind of like "riding" a clutch on an automobile.

How do you know if another watch winder brand uses the cheap one-rate of turns per day motor to wind watches? Most often it's the fact that their ads avoid the subject entirely by not including any information about the number of turns per day their watch winders provide - - that's the giveaway.

Some watch winder brands claim their winders use "fuzzy logic" to wind watches properly.

Fuzzy is right - those watch winders don't know what brand of watch you've put on it and they can't set the rate of turns per day to suit a particular watch. "Fuzzy Logic" is an example of "smoke and mirrors" marketing of one-rate of turns per day only winders.
